WHAT IS MUAY THAI?

Muay Thai (Thai Kickboxing) is a martial art and sport that originated in Thailand.  It is known as the "art of eight limbs" because it uses eight points of contact: fists, elbows, knees and shins.  It is a combat sport that uses stand up striking along with various clinching techniques.  Muay Thai evolved from an ancient combat system called Muay Boran which was used for self-defense and warfare by Thai warriors in the 13th to 16th centuries.  In the early 20th century Muay Thai became a popular spectator sport with rules, referees and also introduced protective gear to make it safer and regulated.

Muay Thai is known for power, speed and technique as well as its cultural and spiritual aspects such as the Wai Kru (paying homage to your coach and camp) and the music played during fights.  It is widely regarded as one of the most effective striking disciplines in the world and it has influenced many other martial arts such as kickboxing, MMA and Krav Maga.  It requires a lot of training, discipline, and dedication but also offers many benefits, such as fitness, confidence, self-defense and mental toughness.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MUAY THAI?

  • Mental toughness - Builds emotional stamina and endurance by challenging limits both physically and mentally.  Being mentally tough enables a person to succeed in uncertainty and adversity.

  • Strengthens the body - Muay Thai training is tough.   Each session lasts 1 hour and incorporates shadow boxing, bag work, pad work, strength training and conditioning exercises.  A sore body today is a strong body tomorrow.  Training in Muay Thai regularly will improve overall fitness and strengthen the body .

  • Self-defense - Muay Thai consists of both attacking and defense techniques. As a combat art originating in military warfare, Muay Thai was designed to inflict pain to the enemy while protecting the user from physical harm. Its range of weapons like the elbow strike, knee strike and push kick can be used to disarm an attack. It is a great self-defense skill, making it ideal for everyone to learn especially kids and women.

  • Self-confidence - Training Muay Thai gets one into better shape.  And when a person feels good about the way he/she looks, the more confidence they exude.  At the same time if one makes the effort to train Muay Thai regularly, he/she will get better at it and seeing that improvement over time has a direct effect in the growth of self-confidence.

  • Easy to learn - Unlike many martial arts that focus on katas (or forms), Muay Thai is straightforward and to the point.  There is no elaborate or detailed choreography and the moves are not designed to be performed for entertainment purposes.  Muay Thai is a stand-up striking style that was developed to hurt the opponent in the most efficient way.  No need for memorizing fancy, complicated movements. Easy as 1-2-3.
